The short answer

Most riders: Black Label v3. Tight budget: Core Line.

  • 18 lb 5 ozBlack Label v3, the lightest
  • $449.99Core Line, the cheapest way in
  • 45c4130, the widest tires it fits

A fixed gear bike has one gear and no coasting. The pedals turn whenever the back wheel turns, which is why track riders and city couriers love them and why they feel strange for about a week. A single speed is the same bike with a freewheel, so you can stop pedaling. The good news is that you rarely have to choose. All three bikes below run a flip flop hub, a rear wheel with a fixed cog on one side and room for a freewheel on the other. Flip the wheel and you have the other bike.

How we picked

Every bike here is in stock at Belcopia today, and every spec comes from State Bicycle Co.'s own product page, not ours. All three ship with front and rear caliper brakes. That matters more than it sounds. Sheldon Brown, the mechanic whose site most bike shops still quote, was blunt about fixed gear: "You really should have a front brake."

What the extra money buys

$130 more buys steel with wider tires. $270 more after that buys about five pounds off. The Core Line is 24 lb 8 oz and the 4130 is 23 lb 7 oz, so the first step up is mostly about tires: 38c against 28c, which you feel on broken pavement. The jump to the Black Label v3 is the one that changes the ride, 18 lb 5 oz with a carbon fork.

The gear ratio card

Tap a bike. The ratio is teeth on the front chainring against teeth on the rear cog. Gear inches is Sheldon Brown's standard: wheel diameter times that ratio. Lower means easier hills, higher means more speed per pedal stroke.

Hills where you live? One tooth bigger on the rear cog makes every pedal stroke about 6% easier. Sheldon Brown rode 42 x 15 on his own hilly roads, a 2.8 ratio, almost exactly the Black Label v3's.

Questions before you buy

Fixed gear or single speed?

Start single speed if you have never ridden fixed. You can coast, and flipping the wheel later takes a few minutes. The 4130 and Core Line ship with both sides ready. The Black Label v3 needs a freewheel added first.

Do I need brakes on a fixed gear?

Yes on the street. Sheldon Brown's advice is that you really should have a front brake. All three bikes here come with front and rear caliper brakes fitted.

Which size do I need?

Go by rider height. The Black Label v3 fits 5'1" to 6'5" in five sizes, the 4130 fits 5'3" to 6'7" in six, and the Core Line fits 5'0" to 6'2" in four. Each product page lists the height range for every size.
