What is not covered
Normal wear and tear on any bike: tires, tubes, chains, brake pads, grips, bar tape, saddles, spokes, and paint or cosmetic finish. Nor is crash and impact damage, improper assembly or adjustment, lack of maintenance, modifications, or incompatible parts. Shop labour is the rider’s responsibility under either tier. RAW finish steel frames are not covered against rust — that is the finish behaving as intended.

Fit

Find your size

Sizes overlap on purpose. Between two, the smaller rides more upright and the larger stretches you out. Every size shares a 415mm chain stay, a 45mm fork offset and a 68mm bottom bracket drop, so the handling stays consistent across the range. State also publish an inseam range per size, from 26.5 to 28 inches on the 49cm up to 34 to 36 inches on the 61cm.

6061 Black Label v3 Overview

The State Bicycle Co. 6061 Black Label v3 in Rally Livery is a double butted 6061 aluminium fixed gear and single speed bike that weighs 18 lb 5 oz and costs $849.99. It is the third generation of the frame State launched in 2014, and State price it close to what it cost at launch.

What changed in v3 is clearance and routing. The frame now takes a 30c tire as standard on a wider 19mm internal rim, the head tube is tapered for a full carbon fork, and the rear brake cable runs inside the frame. Gearing moved to 48x17, which gives unlimited skid patches if you ride fixed and brakeless.

You choose the cockpit at checkout: 600mm wide riser bars with Vans grips, or 420mm compact drops. Same frame, same price, two completely different bikes. Skip it if you want gears, discs or suspension.

Standards you can build on

Every interface on this bike is an established size. 27.2mm seatpost, 31.8mm bar clamp, 68mm English threaded bottom bracket, a 144 BCD chainring, 100mm front and 120mm rear track spacing, and a flip flop hub threaded for a standard freewheel. You can rebuild this bike out of parts anyone stocks.

RALLY LIVERY 6061, DOUBLE BUTTED

The frame is 6061 grade aluminium, double butted and T6 heat treated, with a head tube that tapers from 1 1/8 inch at the top to 1 1/2 inch at the bottom. That taper is what lets State fit a full carbon fork and steerer rather than the alloy fork this frame used to wear. Frame weights run from 2,353g on a 49cm to 2,580g on a 61cm.

The rear brake cable runs inside the down tube, so there is nothing clamped to the outside of the frame collecting grit. The frame is finished with aluminium plated horizontal dropouts, which is how you tension a chain without a derailleur. The Rally Livery finish is gloss white with navy, light blue and red racing stripes along the down tube, fork and top tube, and navy State graphics.

YOU PICK THE BARS

Handle Bar is an option at checkout, not an upgrade with a price on it. Choose 600mm wide riser bars with a 45mm rise and Vans grips for an upright, street position and a wide lever for control in traffic. Choose the 420mm compact drop bar, 130mm drop and 75mm reach, for a lower position and more hand positions on a long ride.

Both builds run the same frame, the same 90mm forged alloy stem with a 31.8mm clamp, and the same calipers, so the only thing that changes is where your hands sit. The riser build is the lighter of the two by about 6 ounces. Bar tape comes on the drop build and grips on the riser build.

Ships partially assembled. Attach the front wheel, handlebars and seatpost, then set your saddle height. Budget about 30 minutes with basic tools. Wellgo alloy pedals with toe cages are included.

Freewheel Not Included

The rear hub is a flip flop threaded on both sides, but only the 17T fixed cog is fitted. Add a freewheel if you want to coast.

Questions before buying

Is the 6061 Black Label v3 a fixie, or can I coast?

Both. It ships with a 17T fixed cog on a flip flop hub, so out of the box it is a fixed gear. The other side of that hub is threaded for a standard freewheel, so you can buy one, flip the wheel around and coast. A freewheel is not included in the box.

What is different between the Black Label v3 and the v2?

The head tube tapers from 1 1/8 to 1 1/2 inch on the v3, which is what allows the full carbon fork and steerer in place of the older alloy fork. Tire clearance went up, with 30c tires as standard on a wider 19mm internal rim, the rear brake cable now runs inside the frame, and gearing moved to 48x17 on a CNC 144 BCD chainring. Sizing also changed: the v3 is 49, 52, 55, 58 and 61cm.

Do the riser bars and the drop bars cost the same?

Yes. Handle Bar is an option on the product, not a paid upgrade, so both builds are $849.99. The riser build is 600mm wide with a 45mm rise and Vans grips. The drop build is a 420mm compact bar with a 130mm drop and 75mm reach, wrapped in bar tape. The riser build is about 6 ounces lighter.

How much does the 6061 Black Label v3 weigh?

State list 18 lb 5 oz for a 49cm with riser bars, rising to 19 lb 1 oz on a 61cm. With the drop bar the same sizes run 18 lb 11 oz to 19 lb 7 oz. Frame sets alone are 2,353g to 2,580g.

What is the widest tire that fits?

It ships on Vittoria Zaffiro V30 tires in 700 x 30c. State list 35c as the recommended maximum on the product page and 40c as the maximum width in their 2024 spec guide. Riders have fitted 38 to 40c, but fitment depends on the tire brand and the wheel, and a larger tire may need a longer chain to keep clearance.

Does it come with brakes?

Yes. Dual pivot forged alloy calipers with a 48 to 67mm reach are included front and rear, along with levers on whichever bar you choose. The 48x17 gearing also gives unlimited skid patches for riders who run fixed without them.

What size should I get?

State list the 49cm for riders 5 foot 1 to 5 foot 5, the 52cm for 5 foot 4 to 5 foot 9, the 55cm for 5 foot 8 to 5 foot 11, the 58cm for 5 foot 10 to 6 foot 2, and the 61cm for 6 foot 1 to 6 foot 5. Lots of fun, great customer service

I am really enjoying the bike. I am riding it single speed. It gives me some variety for a different kind of ride when comparing it with y steel gravel bike. It looks very cool. I have only used it on a 40 mile ride and a 20 mile ride. I ended up using a 20T so I needed a new chain. I had no problem keeping my average speed at 15mph. I might use the smaller 18T I bought but I am not sure I a strong enough for that yet. I am still working on it; I put the levers too low.

6160 V3 Tracklocross for the win

Got this frame a year ago and built it up with a Kona carbon CX fork to get in the realm of Tracklo. The stock fork and frame have clearance for 39mm tyres front and rear which is great for most, but lil light for trails in Durango. Raced this bike for the CX season with 33mm cx mud tyres and it was such a sweet race bike. Light and so snappy, felt like a beast on it. Little harsh compared to the 4130 on bumpy tracks but no big deal and the light weight overpowers this.

Very happy to have this whip in my quiver and so impressed by some of the kids on IG and tiktok that trick track these bikes. Crazy. Love State bikes for their affordability and steeze!

After watching hours of YouTube videos, I was stuck between State and Priority bicycles. What made me choose State was the familiarity with the chain and options for wheels. There was one YouTuber that was glazing on Wabi Cycle and he’d bash the State bike any chance he had. I saw it for what it was and I could get a State with carbon wheels for the entry-level Wabi. The team was helpful and changed my order after some last-minute decisions. The bike is beautiful and a very easy build. For the price, I didn’t mind a few scuffs and about two chips on the paint by the bottom bracket. It’s not noticeable, and if I wasn’t putting it together, I wouldn’t have noticed. Would buy again 100%, but would go for the Bob Marley theme. I don’t have anything negative to say about this bike.

After watching hours of YouTube videos, I was stuck between State and Priority bicycles. What made me choose State was the familiarity with the chain and options for wheels. There was one YouTuber that was glazing on Wabi Cycle and he’d bash the State bike any chance he had. I saw it for what it was and I could get a State with carbon wheels for the entry-level Wabi. The team was helpful and changed my order after some last-minute decisions. The bike is beautiful and a very easy build. For the price, I didn’t mind a few scuffs and about two chips on the paint by the bottom bracket. It’s not noticeable, and if I wasn’t putting it together, I wouldn’t have noticed. Would buy again 100%, but would go for the Bob Marley theme. I don’t have anything negative to say about this bike.
