Magicycle CT-1 Overview

The Magicycle CT-1 is a 54 lb step through commuter e-bike built for paved roads. A 750W geared hub motor peaks at 1100W, a 48V 15Ah battery is good for up to 60 miles by Magicycle’s estimate, and it reaches 28 MPH on pedal assist.

The part that sets it apart is the sensor. Most e-bikes at this price use a cadence sensor, which adds power when the pedals turn. The CT-1 has both a torque sensor, which reads how hard you push and answers in proportion, and a cadence sensor, and you switch between them by holding the i button on the handlebar for two seconds.

It ships with fenders, a rear rack, front and tail lights, a bell and a kickstand already in the box. Skip it if you want fat tires or a full suspension frame: this is the light, quick, city one.

Built to be lived with

One frame, one size, and Magicycle lists it for riders from 5 foot 5 to 6 foot 8. A step through 6061 aluminium frame you can get on and off without swinging a leg, an adjustable handlebar for your reach, and a mechanical suspension fork to take the edge off broken pavement.

Backlit display with a USB port to keep your phone alive, 180mm hydraulic disc brakes front and rear, and a 400 lb payload for a rider and a week of groceries. Magicycle backs the frame, battery, motor, controller and display for two years.

TWO SENSORS, ONE BUTTON

A cadence sensor only knows that the pedals are turning, so the motor comes in a beat late and at a fixed strength. A torque sensor measures how hard you are pressing and matches it, so the bike feels like a lighter version of itself rather than a scooter with pedals.

The CT-1 carries both. Hold the i button on the handlebar for two seconds and it swaps modes on the move: torque for a natural, athletic ride that also stretches the battery, cadence when you just want to spin and let the motor do the work. Seven assist levels and a thumb throttle sit on top of either.

48 VOLTS, 15 AMP HOURS, 54 POUNDS

The battery sits in the down tube: 48V 15Ah, with a battery management system built in, and Magicycle estimates up to 60 miles from it. The 48V 2A charger refills it in 5 to 7 hours.

Because the whole bike is 54 lb, the lightest in Magicycle’s range, the motor is not dragging a fat tire frame around. That is where the range comes from, and it is why it is easy to walk up a kerb or into a hallway.

Questions before buying

What is a switchable sensor?

The CT-1 carries two sensors, a torque sensor and a cadence sensor. Hold the i button on the handlebar for two seconds and it switches between them on the go, so you pick whichever suits how you ride.

What does the torque sensor actually do?

It measures how hard you are pressing on the pedals and adjusts the assist to match, so the ride feels smoother and more responsive and the motor gives power in proportion to your effort rather than in a fixed amount.

Does it have a throttle?

Yes. A thumb throttle gives instant power without pedalling, for a more relaxed ride or a push away from the lights.

How much does it weigh?

54 lb, which Magicycle says is the lightest e-bike it makes. It is easy to manoeuvre through tight turns and to move around a hallway or a bike room.

Is the handlebar adjustable?

Yes. Every CT-1 comes with an adjustable handlebar so you can set your riding position for comfort.

How long does the battery take to charge?
