Vanpowers UrbanGlide-Pro Overview

The Vanpowers UrbanGlide-Pro is a step through city e-bike with a 500W rear hub motor that peaks at 725W, a removable 48V 14.4Ah battery good for up to 73 miles by Vanpowers’ test, and 23 MPH on pedal assist.

What sets it apart from the cheaper Standard is the torque sensor. It reads how hard you press on the pedals and answers in proportion, so the assist feels like your own legs rather than a switch. Hydraulic disc brakes on 180mm rotors, a suspension fork with lockout and a suspension seat post come with it.

Fenders, a rear rack and a headlight are in the box. Two frame sizes, three colours. Skip it if you want a mid drive: that is the UrbanGlide-Ultra.

Built to be lived with

A 6061 aluminium step through frame in two sizes: S fits 5'1" to 5'9", L fits 5'7" to 6'3". An adjustable stem for your reach, a swept back 720mm bar, and a Zoom suspension fork and seat post to take the edge off broken pavement.

A 3.5 inch colour display that turns its own brightness up in sunlight, 180mm hydraulic disc brakes front and rear, a 260 lb payload and a 55 lb rack load. The frame, battery, motor and controller are covered for two years.

ASSIST THAT MATCHES YOUR EFFORT

A cadence sensor only knows the pedals are turning, so the motor comes in a beat late and at a fixed strength. The UrbanGlide-Pro reads pedal force at the bottom bracket instead, and the 500W hub motor answers in proportion: push harder, get more.

That is why it feels like a bicycle first. Ease off and the motor eases off with you, which is also where the range comes from. A thumb throttle sits on the left grip for the push away from the lights, capped at 20 MPH.

The battery lives inside the down tube and comes out, so it charges at your desk while the bike stays in the garage. 48V 14.4Ah, LG 21700 cells, a battery management system built in, IP65 sealed and certified to UL 2271.

Vanpowers tested it to 73 miles with a 165 lb rider on the lowest assist level on flat ground. Your mileage moves with hills, weight and assist level. The 54.6V 4A smart charger refills it in a few hours.

Questions before buying

What does the torque sensor actually do?

It measures how hard you are pressing on the pedals and sets the motor to match, so the assist arrives in proportion to your effort rather than in a fixed amount when the pedals turn. Smoother starts, more natural on hills, and less battery used.

How fast does it go?

23 MPH on pedal assist and 20 MPH on the thumb throttle, by Vanpowers’ spec table.

Is the battery removable?

Yes. It sits inside the down tube and comes out, so you can charge it indoors. It is a 48V 14.4Ah 692Wh pack with LG cells, IP65 sealed and certified to UL 2271.

Which size do I need?

S fits 5'1" to 5'9". L fits 5'7" to 6'3". In between, S rides more upright and L stretches you out.

How is the Pro different from the Standard and the Ultra?

The Standard uses the same motor and battery with a speed sensor, a 7 speed drivetrain, mechanical disc brakes and a plain seat post. The Pro adds the torque sensor, 8 speeds, hydraulic brakes and the suspension seat post. The Ultra moves to a Bafang mid drive motor with a 9 speed drivetrain.

What is the warranty?

Vanpowers covers the frame, battery, motor and controller for two years and the other original parts for one year, against manufacturing defects. Wear items such as tires, brake pads, chain and spokes are not covered. We are an authorized dealer, so it applies.

I love the bike. It’s a bit bigger than I thought it would be, since I ordered a small. Is there any way to make the seat post shorter? Also, I have contacted you twice about the fact that I got two keys but they’re different. They have different numbers on them. The key that works is number K363. But I also received a key numbered K279. Shouldn’t I have two keys that are the same?

The bike arrived well packaged and complete. It seems to be of quality build and the finishing is excellent. I really like the electronics. The display screen is very nice and easy to use. The bike rides well and I enjoy the torque sensor pedal assist. Much nicer than cadence in my opinion. The shifter was smooth and well adjusted right out of the box.

The bike arrived in only a few days and without any damage. I like the ride; the front forks and seat post do a great job. The torque sensor is very smooth and the bike looks good. I have 60 miles on the bike now.
The only real gripe I have is the top speed. On your website, in your comparison between the Adventon and Velotric it is clearly stated the bike has a top speed of 28 MPH. The bike is locked at 20MPH. I live in Tennessee and 28MPH is legal here. I feel this is misleading. This is the...

The battery life has been great so far. I can ride for days without worrying about charging. The only minor thing is the charger takes a while to fully top it off, but that's pretty standard for e-bikes.
