Vanpowers UrbanGlide-Standard Overview

The Vanpowers UrbanGlide-Standard is the entry to the UrbanGlide range: the same 500W rear hub motor that peaks at 725W, the same removable 48V 14.4Ah battery, and the same low step through frame, at $2,099.

What you give up against the Pro is the torque sensor, one gear and the hydraulic brakes. The Standard reads pedal speed rather than pedal force, runs a Shimano 7 speed with mechanical disc brakes on 180mm rotors, and still carries a thumb throttle, a suspension fork with lockout and the 3.5 inch colour display.

Fenders, a rear rack and a headlight are in the box. One frame size, three colours. If you want assist that answers how hard you push, step up to the UrbanGlide-Pro.

Built to be lived with

A 6061 aluminium step through frame in one size, which Vanpowers fits to riders from 5'1" to 5'9". A 720mm swept back bar, a Zoom suspension fork with lockout, and Kenda 27.5 x 2.2 tires with a puncture layer and reflective sidewalls.

A 3.5 inch colour display that turns its own brightness up in sunlight, a 260 lb payload and a 55 lb rack load. The frame, battery, motor and controller are covered for two years.

ONE BATTERY ACROSS THE RANGE

The Standard carries the exact battery the Pro and Ultra use: 48V 14.4Ah, 692Wh, LG cells, a battery management system built in, IP65 sealed and certified to UL 2271. It sits inside the down tube and comes out to charge indoors.

Vanpowers tested it to 62 miles with a 165 lb rider on the lowest assist level on flat ground. The 54.6V 3A smart charger refills it in about 5 hours.

500 WATTS, 725 AT PEAK

The rear hub motor is rated at 500W and peaks at 725W with 65 N.m of torque, enough for city hills with a load on the rack. A speed sensor brings it in as the pedals turn, in five assist levels, and the thumb throttle gives power without pedalling up to 20 MPH.

Pedal assist runs to 23 MPH. A Shimano RD-TZ500 7 speed handles the gears and mechanical disc brakes on 180mm rotors do the stopping.

3.5 Inch Colour Display

600 nit screen that raises its own brightness in sunlight. Speed, battery and ride data, plus the Vanlife app.

Questions before buying

What is the difference between the Standard and the Pro?

Same motor, battery and frame. The Pro adds a torque sensor that matches assist to how hard you pedal, an 8 speed drivetrain, hydraulic disc brakes, an adjustable stem and a suspension seat post, and comes in two sizes. The Standard is $800 less.

How fast does it go?

23 MPH on pedal assist and 20 MPH on the thumb throttle, by Vanpowers’ spec table.

Is the battery removable?

Yes. It sits inside the down tube and comes out, so you can charge it indoors. It is a 48V 14.4Ah 692Wh pack with LG cells, IP65 sealed and certified to UL 2271.

What size is it?

One frame size, which Vanpowers fits to riders from 5'1" to 5'9". Taller riders should look at the Pro or Ultra, which add a size L for 5'7" to 6'3".

Are mechanical disc brakes a problem?

They stop the bike fine and are simpler to adjust at home, but they need more lever pressure than hydraulics and the pads wear faster. If you ride steep hills daily, the Pro’s hydraulic brakes are worth having.

What is the warranty?

Vanpowers covers the frame, battery, motor and controller for two years and the other original parts for one year, against manufacturing defects. Wear items such as tires, brake pads, chain and spokes are not covered. We are an authorized dealer, so it applies.

The frame on this electric bike feels really solid and well-made. After assembly, it feels very stable to ride, with no looseness or weird noises. Assembly was also simpler than I expected; most parts were pre-assembled. The riding experience has been great too. The 500W motor provides smooth acceleration, and the top speed of 20 mph is more than enough for my city commute.

The bike is comfortable and the components are solid quality. The battery is powerful and goes much farther than expected on a charge.

The bike is gorgeous. Everything was as described. It appears well made and very sturdy. I am 5'1" and it is just at the upper limit of the right size for me. It's easy to pedal even without the assist. It is definitely a lot of fun to ride and has more power than I expected. I am very happy with my purchase.

The UrbanGlide Standard has been perfect for running errands around town. The power is just right and really saves energy on those longer days when I’m zipping between places. The battery range is great too, and I’ve found it to be more than enough for my daily city commutes. One thing I noticed after a few weeks of riding was that the seat could be a bit more comfortable for longer trips. So, I swapped it out for a larger, softer seat, and the difference has been amazing!

I wasn’t sure if an e-bike would work for me, but the Standard has been amazing. I use it to drop my kids off at school and then head to my yoga class. The low-step frame is perfect for hopping on and off quickly, especially when I’ve got my hands full. It’s so smooth and quiet, even when I’m zipping down bumpy neighborhood streets. My only regret? Not getting one sooner!

I got this e-bike for my wife and she really loves it. Assembly was easy and bike was ready to ride in less than 30 minutes. The weight of the bike is only about 68 pounds with the battery, so it is easy to fit on a bike rack and to hang to my wall mounts in the garage and it is easy to ride without battery power.

I've been riding this electric bike for a few weeks now, and it's been a really enjoyable experience. Setup was simple, and after charging it up, I took it out around the neighborhood and nearby trails. The pedal assist feels natural and gives just the right boost, especially when starting from stops or climbing small hills. Only thing I'd mention is the seat could use a bit more padding for longer rides.

So far I’m enjoying the bike. A couple minor issues in assembling—getting the handlebars right. I didn’t realize there is a sleep button for the battery. Hadn’t encountered that before. It rides well, plenty of power. Id have preferred a regular progressive hand throttle to the turbo button that’s either on or off. Overall positive. Seems well built.
