4130 Road v2

4130 Road v2 Overview

The State Bicycle Co. 4130 Road v2 is a double butted chromoly road bike that weighs 22.1 pounds and costs $649.99. The frame and fork are the same 4130 steel platform State built its name on. What changed in v2 is the drivetrain: the shifters moved off the down tube and onto the bars, so you shift where your hands already are.

It runs a 1x8 setup with a 42T chainring and an 11 to 28T cassette. No front derailleur to fumble on a climb. Tires are 700 x 38c gum walls rather than the 28mm most bikes wear at this price, which is the single best decision on the build if you ride real city pavement.

Skip it if you want hydraulic discs, a twelve speed cassette, or a bike for racing. This one uses rim brakes and eight gears on purpose, and every part on it is a standard size you can buy anywhere.

Standards you can build on

Every interface on this bike is an established size. 27.2mm seatpost, 31.8mm bar, 68mm English threaded bottom bracket, 110 BCD cranks, a standard 8 speed freehub and a standard derailleur hanger. You can work on it, and you can change it, without hunting for a proprietary part.

Questions before buying? Call 718.808.6415, Monday to Friday.

DOUBLE BUTTED CHROMOLY

Steel takes the sting out of cracked pavement in a way aluminium does not. The 4130 Road v2 uses a double butted, TIG welded chromoly frame paired with a 4130 chromoly fork on a 1 1/8 inch threadless steerer. Two water bottle mounts, a 68mm English threaded bottom bracket shell, and nothing proprietary anywhere on the bike.

Geometry stays consistent across all five sizes: a 425mm chain stay and a 45mm fork offset on every frame, from the 49cm through the 62cm. Sizes overlap on purpose, so if you fall between two the smaller gives a more upright fit and the larger stretches you out.

RIM BRAKES, AND WHY THAT IS FINE

A dual pivot caliper has roughly six moving parts and you can see all of them. Pads cost a few dollars and swap with an Allen key. There is no fluid, no bleed kit, no rotor to true, and nothing that needs a shop appointment. On a bike designed to be ridden, locked up and ridden again, that is the right trade.

The rest of the build follows the same logic. Square taper cranks on a 110 BCD, a standard 8 speed freehub, a standard derailleur hanger, 100mm front and 130mm rear quick release spacing. Swap the cassette for more range whenever you want. There are still a lot of excellent rim brake components in the world and comparatively few new bikes to use them on.

Questions before buying

What is different between the 4130 Road v2 and the original?

The shifters. Version one used down tube shifters, which meant reaching down to the frame every time you wanted a gear. The v2 runs Sensah Reflex integrated drop bar shifters, so shifting happens at the hoods. It also moves to 700 x 38c tires.

Why does it use rim brakes instead of disc brakes?

Simplicity and cost. A dual pivot caliper has about six moving parts, pads cost a few dollars and swap with an Allen key, and there is no fluid to bleed or rotor to true. For a bike meant to be ridden and locked up daily, that keeps it out of the shop.

Are 38mm tires slow on pavement?

No. A wide tire at the correct pressure rolls about as fast as a narrow one on real road surfaces. What you gain is comfort over potholes and cracked pavement, more grip in the wet, and far fewer pinch flats.

How much does the 4130 Road v2 weigh?

State lists complete bike weights from 10035g on a 49cm, which is 22.1 pounds, up to 10489g on a 62cm, which is 23.1 pounds.

Can I upgrade the drivetrain later?

Yes. It uses a standard 8 speed freehub, a standard derailleur hanger and square taper cranks on a 110 BCD. You can swap the cassette for more range, or change the wheels, cockpit and tires without needing anything proprietary.

What size should I get?

State lists the 49cm for riders 5 foot 5 to 5 foot 8, the 52cm for 5 foot 7 to 5 foot 10, the 55cm for 5 foot 9 to 6 foot, the 59cm for 5 foot 11 to 6 foot 3, and the 62cm for 6 foot 2 to 6 foot 7. Sizes overlap on purpose. Between two, the smaller rides more upright and the larger stretches you out.
