Fit

Find your size

Sizes overlap on purpose. Between two, the smaller is the more playful bike and the larger is the more stable one at speed. Every size shares a 426.5mm chain stay, a 65 degree head angle and a 44mm fork offset, so the handling stays consistent across the range.

Geometry
4130 Trail

4130 Trail Overview

The State Bicycle Co. 4130 Trail is a double butted chromoly hardtail with a 65 degree head angle, 130mm of RockShox travel and a Shimano Deore 1x12 drivetrain, at $1,499.99. The number that matters most is the fork. At this price a hardtail normally gets a budget coil fork on 30mm stanchions. This one runs a RockShox Psylo Silver RC with 35mm uppers, a Solo Air spring and a Motion Control damper.

The drivetrain is Deore M6100, a 32T ring against an 11 to 50T cassette. That is 454 percent of range from one shifter, with a low gear of 0.64 to 1 for steep loose climbing and nothing to cross chain. The frame carries a universal derailleur hanger, internal dropper routing in a 31.6mm seat tube, a threaded bottom bracket and three bottle mounts on the down tube.

Skip it if you want full suspension or a bike that is light. This is a steel hardtail and it weighs 32 pounds. What you get for that is a frame that shrugs off rocks, a fork that works, and a parts list you can replace anywhere.

Standards you can build on

Every interface on this bike is a current standard. A universal derailleur hanger, a 73mm BSA threaded bottom bracket, a 31.6mm seat tube with internal routing, Boost 110 and 148mm hub spacing, and a 35mm bar clamp. Nothing here is proprietary, so the upgrade path is open and a replacement part is a part any shop already stocks.

DOUBLE BUTTED CHROMOLY, AND A UDH

The frame is double butted 4130 chromoly. Thicker at the welds where the load goes, thinner in the middle of the tube where it does not, which is how a steel frame stays strong without turning into a girder. Steel also bends rather than cracks, so a rock strike that would write off a light aluminium frame usually just leaves a mark.

The dropout is a Universal Derailleur Hanger. That means the hanger is the same part on this bike as on a few hundred other current frames, so a shop in a strange town can hand you one off the shelf instead of ordering a shape only State sells. The bottom bracket is a 73mm BSA thread, which does not creak and unscrews with a tool every shop owns.

130MM OF ROCKSHOX PSYLO

The fork is where cheap hardtails are usually cheap. A coil spring, 30mm legs and a damper that is really just a hole. The 4130 Trail gets a RockShox Psylo Silver RC instead: 130mm of travel on 35mm upper tubes, which is the diameter that stops the front end flexing when you brake hard into a rocky corner.

Inside it is a Solo Air spring you set with a shock pump to your own weight, and a Motion Control damper with an external compression adjuster. The steerer ships uncut so a shop can set your bar height before trimming it. Axle to crown is 550mm with a 44mm offset, on a 65 degree head angle.

WHAT'S IN THE BOX

4130 Trail Complete Bike

Ships partially unassembled. It needs the crank and front wheel fitted, the fork set up and the steerer cut to your height, plus derailleur indexing. State recommends professional assembly and so do we.

Tubeless Valves

The WTB i30 rims and Trailboss tires are both tubeless ready and the valves are in the box. Sealant is not included.

Belcopia Support

We are an authorized State Bicycle Co. dealer, so every bike is backed by State’s own warranty. Questions before or after the sale, call 718.808.6415, Monday to Friday.

Questions before buying

What size 4130 Trail should I get?

State lists the XS/S for riders 5 foot 1 to 5 foot 5, the S/M for 5 foot 5 to 5 foot 10, the M/L for 5 foot 10 to 6 foot 1, and the XL for 6 foot 1 to 6 foot 5. Sizes overlap on purpose. Between two, the smaller is the more playful bike and the larger is the more stable one at speed.

Is the bike in the photos the bike that ships?

The white background studio photos are. Some of the outdoor photos are State's own press shots of a bike fitted with Industry Nine Sector Carbon wheels and a Seekrun S7 wireless dropper, which are paid upgrades and are not included. What ships is WTB i30 wheels on Boost hubs and a 31.6mm SBC seatpost with a quick release collar.

What is a UDH and why does it matter?

A Universal Derailleur Hanger is the industry standard replacement for the small aluminium bracket the rear derailleur bolts to. It is the same part across a few hundred current frames, so if you bend one, any shop that stocks UDH hangers can get you riding the same day instead of ordering a State specific shape.

Can I fit a dropper post?

Yes. The seat tube is 31.6mm with internal routing already in the frame, so a cabled dropper routes through it and a wireless post needs no routing at all. State sizes dropper travel by frame: 125mm on an XS/S, 150mm on an S/M and M/L, and 175mm on an XL.

Will wider or smaller wheels fit?

The frame clears a 29 inch tire up to 2.6 inches, or a 27.5 inch tire up to 3.0 inches. The fork clears a 29 inch tire up to 2.6 inches and State does not rate it for 27.5. It ships on 29 x 2.4 inch WTB Trailboss.

How much does the 4130 Trail weigh?

State lists complete bike weights of 32 lb 3 oz on an XS/S, 32 lb 4 oz on an S/M, 32 lb 8 oz on an M/L and 32 lb 11 oz on an XL. The frame alone is about 6 lb 11 oz and the fork is 6 lb 3 oz with an uncut steerer.
