The choice here is the wheel, not the frame height. Both are step through, both carry 450 lb. The 20 inch is lighter and easier to park; the 26 inch rolls over more and suits taller riders.

Magicycle Deer 2.0 Overview

The Magicycle Deer 2.0 is a full suspension step through fat tire e-bike. A 1000W geared hub motor peaks at 1800W with 100Nm of torque, a 52V 20Ah battery is good for up to 120 miles by Magicycle’s estimate, and a hydraulic lockout fork works with a coil shock at the back.

Like the CT-1 it carries two sensors. A torque sensor reads how hard you are pushing and answers in proportion, a cadence sensor just responds to the pedals turning, and you swap between them by holding the i button on the handlebar for two seconds. Seven levels of assist and a thumb throttle sit on top of either.

Choose the wheel first. The 20 inch is the compact one at 83 lb, for riders from 4 foot 10. The 26 inch is the big one at 92.3 lb, for riders from 5 foot 5. Both carry 450 lb and both ship with the rack, fenders and lights already fitted.

Built to take the hit

A hydraulic lockout fork at the front and a coil shock at the back, on 4 inch fat tires. Lock the fork out for pavement, open it for the trail. 180mm hydraulic disc brakes at both ends, with a motor cutoff in the levers.

A 6061 aluminium step through frame, a colour display with a USB port, and integrated front and brake lights. Magicycle backs the frame, battery, motor, controller and display for two years.

FULL SUSPENSION, FRONT AND REAR

A fat tire takes the sting out of small stuff on its own. It does nothing for a root, a kerb or a rutted fire road, which is where a rigid fat bike beats you up.

The Deer answers that at both ends: an alloy hydraulic fork with a lockout at the front, and a coil shock at the back. Lock the fork for smooth pavement and you are not bobbing away your range. Open it on a rocky path and the wheels track the ground instead of skipping across it.

TWENTY INCH OR TWENTY SIX

Same frame design, same motor and battery, two very different bikes. The 20 inch runs a 16 inch frame and weighs 83 lb, and Magicycle lists it for riders from 4 foot 10 to 6 foot 2. It is the easier one to park, lift and live with.

The 26 inch runs an 18 inch frame at 92.3 lb, for riders from 5 foot 5 to 6 foot 8. Bigger wheels roll over more and stretch the bike out. Both take 4 inch fat tires and both carry 450 lb.

Questions before buying

What is a switchable sensor?

The Deer 2.0 carries both a torque sensor and a cadence sensor. Hold the i button on the handlebar for two seconds and it switches between them on the go, so you can pick whichever suits your riding style.

What does the torque sensor actually do?

It measures pedalling force and adjusts the assistance to match, which makes the ride smoother and more responsive. Magicycle says a torque sensor suits you if you want a more natural ride and more exercise out of it, and the Deer 2.0 has both sensors so you do not have to choose one for good.

Should I take the 20 inch or the 26 inch?

Magicycle lists the 20 inch for riders 4 foot 10 to 6 foot 2 on a 16 inch frame at 83 lb, and the 26 inch for riders 5 foot 5 to 6 foot 8 on an 18 inch frame at 92.3 lb. The 20 inch is easier to park and lift. The 26 inch rolls over rough ground better. Both carry 450 lb.

Do I need full suspension on an e-bike?

Magicycle’s own answer is to look at the ground you ride most. If your trails are rough, rocky, rooty or steep, full suspension is worth it: more traction, more control and more line choices. On smooth pavement you can lock the front fork out.

What is the difference between the Deer and the Deer 2.0?

Magicycle says the 2.0 adds dual sensors, an optimised 1800W peak motor, an 8 gear cassette, an upgraded power system for more range, new colours, and a welding technique that leaves no visible weld joints.

How long does the battery take to charge?

Four to seven hours on the included 3.0A fast charger. Magicycle estimates up to 120 miles from a full 52V 20Ah charge, and real range always depends on rider weight, terrain, assist level and weather.
