Vanpowers UrbanGlide-Ultra Overview

The Vanpowers UrbanGlide-Ultra is the top of the UrbanGlide range. A Bafang M600 mid drive motor at the cranks turns out 500W, 900W at peak and 120 N.m of torque through a Microshift 9 speed, so downshifting for a hill helps the motor the way it helps you. The same removable 48V 14.4Ah battery as the Pro is good for up to 76 miles by Vanpowers’ test.

It is pedal assist only, to 20 MPH, with a torque sensor built into the motor. Tektro hydraulic brakes on 180mm rotors, a suspension fork with lockout, a suspension seat post and an adjustable stem come with it, on the same 370mm step through frame in two sizes.

Fenders, a rear rack and a headlight are in the box. If you want a throttle, that is the UrbanGlide-Pro.

Built to be lived with

A 6061 aluminium step through frame in two sizes: S fits 5'1" to 5'9", L fits 5'7" to 6'3". An adjustable stem for your reach, a swept back 720mm bar, and a Zoom suspension fork and seat post to take the edge off broken pavement.

A 3.5 inch colour display that turns its own brightness up in sunlight, Tektro 180mm hydraulic disc brakes, a 260 lb payload and a 55 lb rack load. The frame, battery, motor and controller are covered for two years.

BAFANG M600, 120 N.M AT THE CRANKS

A hub motor pushes the wheel at one ratio. A mid drive pushes the chain, so all nine gears multiply its torque the way they multiply yours. That is why 120 N.m at the crank climbs harder than the Pro’s 65 N.m at the hub, and why the bike balances better with the weight low and central.

The torque sensor is built into the motor: press harder, get more. Pedal assist runs to 20 MPH. There is no throttle on the Ultra.

692 WATT HOURS, OUT IN ONE HAND

The battery lives inside the down tube and comes out, so it charges at your desk while the bike stays in the garage. 48V 14.4Ah, LG cells, a battery management system built in, IP65 sealed and certified to UL 2271.

Vanpowers tested it to 76 miles with a 165 lb rider on the lowest assist level on flat ground, the longest of the three UrbanGlides. The 54.6V 4A smart charger refills it in a few hours.

Questions before buying

Why a mid drive instead of a hub motor?

A mid drive turns the cranks, so its torque goes through the gears. Downshift for a climb and the motor gets the same help you do, which is why 120 N.m at the crank climbs harder than the Pro’s hub motor. It also keeps the weight low and central.

Does it have a throttle?

No. The Ultra is pedal assist only, to 20 MPH, with a torque sensor in the motor that matches assist to how hard you press. The Pro and Standard have a thumb throttle.

Is the battery removable?

Yes. It sits inside the down tube and comes out, so you can charge it indoors. It is a 48V 14.4Ah 692Wh pack with LG cells, IP65 sealed and certified to UL 2271.

Which size do I need?

S fits 5'1" to 5'9". L fits 5'7" to 6'3". In between, S rides more upright and L stretches you out.

How is the Ultra different from the Pro?

Same frame, battery, brakes, fork, seat post and display. The Ultra swaps the 500W hub motor for a Bafang M600 mid drive with 120 N.m, goes to 9 speeds, tests to 76 miles instead of 73, and drops the throttle. It is $700 more.

What is the warranty?

I have ridden 300 miles since I bought it, and the app on my phone records all my trips. Most of the time, I'm taking my child to the nearby sports field, but it feels really natural to use. Even with my child, I don't feel like it's hard to ride. My husband mentioned that this e-bike uses a mid-drive motor, so the riding experience is definitely smooth, and the build quality is very sturdy, so there's no need to worry about any issues when taking the child out for a ride.

Just got back from my Pacific Coast Highway trip. The app auto-synced my favorite routes from last summer's rides (so clutch when you're juggling maps and coffee stops). Loaded it up with a 50lbs dry bag on the rear rack - basically my entire REI camping kit plus a hammock. Could've sworn I was riding empty with how stable it felt! Pro tip: The low center of gravity kept me planted even when passing RVs. Still getting the same smooth assist at 50lbs as I do on my grocery runs.

I so love this bike. Perfect for the hilly streets of Seattle. Love the adjustability of the handlebars for my riding style. If anything, I would like peddle assist 1 to be half the assist for a slightly better workout on flats. Wish the battery compartment opened under the bike, allowing room for water bottle mounting screws on top. Overall, however, I'm very happy with the bike.

The fit and finish on this bike really impressed me. The paint job looks great, the brakes feel solid, and the digital display is easy to read. Their cable routing is clean and well-protected. I really can't say enough good things about the quality for this price point.
