Vanpowers GrandTeton-Pro Overview

The Vanpowers GrandTeton-Pro is an all terrain fat tire e-bike: a 750W rear hub motor that peaks at 900W with 85 N.m of torque, a removable 48V 14.7Ah battery good for up to 93 miles by Vanpowers’ test, and 28 MPH on pedal assist.

Most fat tire bikes at this price use a cadence sensor. The GrandTeton-Pro reads pedal force at the bottom bracket and answers in proportion, so climbs feel natural and the battery goes further. A 120mm suspension fork with lockout, Tektro hydraulic brakes on 203mm rotors and CST 26 x 4 tires handle the rough stuff.

Fenders and a rear rack are fitted, and the frame takes a second battery for up to 185 miles. One size, two colours. If you want a mid drive with more torque, that is the GrandTeton-Ultra.

Built to be lived with

A 6061 aluminium frame tested to 150% of the ISO 4210 standard, one size for riders from 5'5" to 6'3". A 720mm bar, a Selle Royal saddle, a 120mm suspension fork with lockout and CST 26 x 4 fat tires on double wall rims.

A 1.9 inch colour display with adaptive brightness and Bluetooth, a headlight with high and low beam, a brake activated tail light, a 400 lb payload and a 55 lb rack. The frame, battery, motor and controller are covered for two years.

750 WATTS THAT ANSWER YOUR LEGS

The rear hub motor is rated at 750W, peaks at 900W and turns out 85 N.m of torque. What makes it feel different is the torque sensor at the bottom bracket: it measures how hard you press and the motor matches it, rather than shoving when the pedals turn.

Pedal assist runs to 28 MPH and a left hand thumb throttle gives power without pedalling up to 20 MPH. A Shimano CUES 9 speed with an 11 to 41 cassette covers the climbs.

705 WATT HOURS, ROOM FOR A SECOND

The battery lives inside the down tube and comes out for charging: 48V 14.7Ah, 705.6Wh, Samsung cells, a battery management system built in and IP67 sealed. Vanpowers tested it to 93 miles with a 165 lb rider in ECO mode on flat ground.

The frame has a port for an optional second battery, which Vanpowers says takes the range to 185 miles. The 54.6V 3A fast charger is in the box.

Questions before buying

What does the torque sensor actually do?

It measures how hard you are pressing on the pedals and sets the motor to match, so assist arrives in proportion to your effort rather than in a fixed amount when the pedals turn. On loose ground that means no lurch, and on climbs it means the battery goes further.

How fast does it go?

28 MPH on pedal assist and 20 MPH on the thumb throttle, by Vanpowers’ spec table.

How far does it really go?

Vanpowers measured 93 miles with a 165 lb rider in ECO mode on flat ground. Hills, weight, headwinds and higher assist all cut that. A second battery is optional and Vanpowers puts the two together at up to 185 miles.

What size is it?

One frame size, which Vanpowers fits to riders from 5'5" to 6'3".

What is the difference between the Pro and the Ultra?

Same frame, battery, 9 speed drivetrain and tires. The Pro has a 750W rear hub motor, a coil suspension fork, 2 piston brakes, a throttle, fenders and a rack. The Ultra moves to an Ananda mid drive with 130 N.m, an air fork, 4 piston brakes, a dropper post and the T-Box 4G tracker, with no throttle, fenders or rack.

What is the warranty?

Vanpowers covers the frame, battery, motor and controller for two years and the other original parts for one year, against manufacturing defects. Wear items such as tires, brake pads, chain and spokes are not covered. We are an authorized dealer, so it applies.

Solid e-bike for the price. The Galaxy Silver looks great in person. Battery lasts a good while, and it handles trails way better than I expected. The thumb throttle is handy. Plus, it just looks cool parked outside the coffee shop.

Just took this Galaxy Silver beast out for a spin along the lakefront. This e-bike is seriously smooth! The fat tires soaked up all the bumps, and the pedal assist made cruising effortless. Love the look of it too��the silver finish is sharp.

Just assembled it straight out of the box and jumped on for a quick spin. The streets around here were pretty limited, so I cruised over to the local park. Man, it felt incredible!

When I was picking out my bike, I knew I needed something that would give me a little extra boost, so I went this one with the thumb throttle. Best decision ever! There were times on that steep climb when I was totally drained, but all I had to do was hit the throttle and it took me right up. Seriously, it made the whole climb feel so much easier.

Today’s mountain ride with f was a total CRAZY! The trail had some rough patches—mud, rocks, you name it—but this bike handled it like a pro. I’m not that experienced of a rider, but it made the whole thing so easy. My f tried it too, she has more experience than me, and she got one immed. Felt like I could ride forever!

This bike feels great on long rides. The seat is comfortable, and the motor helps me save energy for the final stretch. I wish the battery would charge a bit faster, though, but overall it’s a great bike for anyone who loves spending hours outdoors

Only thing I don’t like is a bit too heavy

I purchased a Grand Teton Pro for my wife and a Grand Teton Ultra for me. I was impressed with how well the bikes were packed in the boxes and they arrived with no damage. We've taken a few trips and so far, there have been no issues. These are great bikes! I only wish I had waited a week longer to purchase as there was another price cut and I could have saved an addition $400.

I gave the bike to my husband for Xmas. We are both 70 and heading into retirement. Years ago, I gave him a red motorcycle for Xmas so this seemed like the perfect way to launch our retirement phase.
